Cardiac Catheterization Laboratories
For treating many types of heart or vascular disease, cardiac catheterization is an important diagnostic procedure. In many cases, it can lead to minimally invasive treatments, sometimes as an alternative to larger, open-heart surgeries. During a catheterization procedure, a thin tube called a catheter is inserted into an artery or vein to access and treat the heart and blood vessels. Because of their complexity, these advanced procedures require a special facility called a catheterization laboratory or “cath lab.”
Columbia’s Cardiac Catheterization Laboratories combine world-class expertise with the latest technologies and on-site advanced diagnostic testing. Our cath labs are designed to make sure your treatment is comfortable, safe, and fast—so you can get back to your life.
Why Columbia?
Columbia has pioneered the field of interventional cardiology, helping to develop and perfect many common catheter-based procedures and techniques. These minimally invasive treatments improve safety, reduce recovery time, and shorten or even eliminate hospital stays.

NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Irving Medical Center (NYP/CUIMC)
The Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Irving Medical Center (NYP/CUIMC) serves as the premier center for complex procedures in New York City and beyond. With a team of internationally renowned interventional cardiologists, support from Columbia’s cardiac surgery team, and collaboration with the broader faculty of CUIMC, there is simply no more prominent location for interventional cardiac care.
Our cath lab team regularly performs the full spectrum of interventional treatments, from routine angioplasty to the most complex procedures. Services include:
- Diagnostic catheterization and coronary angiography
- Coronary angioplasty and Stenting/Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI)
- Right heart catheterization and heart biopsies
- Advanced imaging studies such as IVUS (intravascular ultrasound), which uses sound waves to look inside blood vessels, and OCT (optical coherence tomography), which uses light
- Endovascular care for peripheral artery disease (PAD)
- Transcatheter valve replacement, such as the TAVR procedure for aortic stenosis
- Left atrial appendage closure (Watchman device) to prevent atrial fibrillation-related blood clots
- Patent foramen ovale (PFO) closure
- Pacemaker implantation
- Implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs)
