Fellowship Director
The Seymour, Paul and Gloria Milstein Division of Cardiology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center offers a fellowship in clinical cardiac electrophysiology that is accredited by the American College of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Each year two new fellows are recruited to the training program that lasts two years. The first year, fellows spend time primarily in our busy electrophysiology labs, with dedicated time also provided for inpatient and outpatient consultative care, conferences, journal clubs, and teaching sessions. After the intensive two-year clinical training, fellows become eligible to take the ABIM boards in Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology.
Curriculum
Procedural Experience
Currently, there are three dedicated clinical laboratory rooms for electrophysiology procedures, two primarily for catheter ablation procedures and a third primarily for device implantation. Fellows rotate weekly among the three rooms to maximize their clinical and procedural experience. Throughout the year, fellows have hands-on experience on a wide variety of cases ranging from simple radiofrequency ablation procedures for supraventricular tachycardias to complex arrhythmias, including atrial fibrillation, endocardial and epicardial ventricular tachycardia, and those associated with congenital heart disease. Our fellows graduate with more than 300 ablation cases and 300 device cases, and easily meet ACGME requirements.
Outpatient Clinic
Fellows see patients in the electrophysiology consult or device clinic weekly. Most patients are referred for ablation or device implantation. Under supervision from the faculty, fellows participate integrally in the peri-procedural care of their patients.
