What is Valvular Heart Disease?
Valvular heart disease means one or more of the four valves of your heart aren’t functioning properly. When your valves stiffen and narrow (stenosis), they can’t open properly, leading to poor blood flow to your body. If your valves don’t close correctly, blood may come back into your heart chambers (regurgitation). This makes your heart work harder and can lead to permanent damage over time.
Common Conditions Treated
- Aortic stenosis
- Aortic regurgitation
- Bicuspid aortic valve disease (when the aortic valve only has two flaps instead of three, limiting effective blood flow)
- Mitral stenosis
- Mitral regurgitation
- Tricuspid stenosis
- Tricuspid regurgitation
- Congenital valve disease
Our Services
- Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) – A bioprosthetic valve is positioned and expanded within the malfunctioning aortic valve replacing the diseased valve and restoring normal function
- Valve-in-Valve Bioprosthetic Valve Replacement - A TAVR device is deployed within a failing biological valve replacement to restore normal function
- Transcatheter Mitral Valve Repair (TMVR) - A small device called a MitraClip is attached to the mitral valve to help reduce regurgitation
- Annuloplasty - A small ring is used to reinforce the mitral or tricuspid valve and reduce regurgitation
- Transcatheter Mitral or Tricuspid Valve Replacement – A diseased mitral or tricuspid valve is replaced with a dedicated bioprosthetic valve delivered via a catheter based approach
Highlights
Valve Replacement and Repair Without Surgery
As an alternative to surgery, we can now replace or repair a malfunctioning valve using minimally invasive procedures that are fast, safe, and reduce recovery time. These interventional treatments use catheters to access the heart through blood vessels in the groin, avoiding the stress and prolonged recovery times of open-heart surgery.
The Columbia Structural Heart & Valve Center
The Columbia Structural Heart & Valve Center is a collaboration between the Center for Interventional Vascular Therapy (CIVT) and the Columbia Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery. Our world-renowned team has a proven history of safety, innovation, and skill—our program is second to none for interventional valve replacement and complex hybrid (multivalve) procedures.
Pioneers in the Field
Columbia helped develop many of the interventional valve replacement procedures in use today, including transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR).
Unmatched Expertise
When doctors want to become experts, they come to us—over 50 percent of the heart teams in the U.S. performing TAVRs were trained here at Columbia.
Cutting-Edge Technology
Our team continues to lead research efforts into new devices and techniques, including new mitral and tricuspid valve treatments.
The Best Team Means the Best Outcomes
The Columbia Structural Heart & Valve Center performs over 1,000 structural procedures per year. This includes many complex, high-risk procedures—often for patients who were told they were not candidates for treatment elsewhere.
And according to the New York State Department of Health, Columbia outperformed all area hospitals for TAVRs—only Columbia performed significantly better than the state average.
Care at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital
Our advanced Catheterization Laboratory at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital provides the highest level of care using the latest technology, including on-site access to advanced diagnostic testing to make sure your treatment is fast, comfortable, and effective.
Columbia Virtual Visits
For some appointments, it may not be necessary to come into the office at all. We offer Virtual Visit telehealth appointments, so you can see your doctor from the comfort of your own home.
